Ashtakoota matching compares two birth charts across eight factors and scores the result out of 36. Fifteen of those points sit in the final two kootas alone, which is why two charts can agree on almost everything else and still score modestly.
Enter both sets of birth details in the console. Everything is computed on your device and the score is broken down koota by koota, with Mangal dosha and the classical exceptions shown alongside it.
About this calculator
Is kundali matching necessary for marriage?
The eight-koota system used here is a later codification rather than something the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra sets out in this exact form; the classical corpus has no dedicated matching chapter built this way. It is a long-established and widely followed convention, not a scriptural precondition for marriage, and it is generally weighed as one traditional input alongside family and personal considerations rather than a requirement on its own.
What score is considered acceptable?
Common practice treats 18 and above as workable and 24 and above as strong. A low score is a prompt to look more closely at which koota fell short, not a verdict.
Is 27 out of 36 a good guna match?
Yes, on the common convention above: 18 and above is treated as workable, and 24 and above as strong, so 27 sits well inside the strong range. A high total does not make every individual koota worth ignoring, and a low score in one particular koota, Mangal dosha especially, is worth reading on its own rather than folding into the total.
What is bhakoot in kundali matching?
Bhakoot is the seventh koota, worth 7 of the 36 points. It checks the sign distance between the two Moons and fails, scoring zero, when that distance is 6/8, 5/9 or 2/12. This calculator lists the commonly cited waivers beside the score: a shared sign lord, or the two lords being natural friends, are the ones usually given for setting a Bhakoot dosha aside.
What is nadi in kundali matching?
Nadi is the eighth and heaviest koota, worth 8 of the 36 points. It checks which of the three nadis, Adi, Madhya or Antya, each person's nakshatra falls into, and it fails, scoring zero, when both fall in the same one. This calculator lists the commonly cited waivers beside the result: a shared nakshatra with different padas, or Moon signs that differ, are the ones usually given for setting a Nadi dosha aside.
Does a low score mean a marriage will fail?
No. Guna milan is one traditional input among many, and classical texts themselves list numerous conditions that cancel an apparent problem. It is not a prediction.
What happens if kundalis do not match?
A low total, or a flagged dosha such as Mangal, Bhakoot or Nadi, is a prompt to look at which factor fell short rather than a verdict on the marriage. Classical texts list conditions that waive many of these doshas, and this calculator shows them beside the score instead of applying them silently.
What is Mangal dosha and how is it decided here?
Mangal dosha, also called Manglik or Kuja dosha, is Mars occupying the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Those five come from the classical verse. The 2nd house is a later South Indian addition, so it is computed and shown separately rather than blended in. The houses are counted from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus, and the result shows which reference flagged rather than only a verdict.
Why might my score differ from another site?
Usually the Vashya or Yoni table, since published authorities differ on individual cells, or the ayanamsa, which shifts the Moon between nakshatras near a boundary. This calculator uses Lahiri and the tables most Indian software follows, and it has been checked field by field against a published report for a real pair of charts.
